Special requirements

Whether you are vision impaired, have a speech impediment or have any other medical condition which means you can only take IELTS under special arrangements, IELTS test venues across our network can help you.

Special arrangements we offer include:

Extra time for medical conditions or infant feeding
Braille papers
Modified larger paper
Enlarged written prompts on the Speaking task card
Special Listening test with necessary stops and pauses
Lip-reading version of the Listening test
Special amplification equipment
Word processing software and voice-activated software

These special arrangements are free of charge.

Please contact your test centre early, as we require at least six weeks to make arrangements after all documents have been submitted and approved.

It's best to contact your test venue before booking your IELTS test and they will be able to advise on the next available test dates. The notice time can vary depending on the modifications needed to your test.

Questions about Special Requirements

Is a health condition considered to be a special requirement?

Yes, it is.
We can provide a variety of arrangements to support you during the test if you have special requirements due to hearing loss, low vision, learning difficulties, medical conditions or infant feeding.
Other special arrangements include:

Modified and enlarged print papers

Braille papers

Braille and enlarged print versions of the Speaking test

Lip reading version of the Listening test

Extra time for the Reading and Writing test or use of a computer (e.g. for candidates with dyslexia)

A scribe to write answers on your behalf or a special Listening Test (e.g. using amplification equipment and/or lip-reading version of the Listening test for those with hearing difficulties)

Test centres deal with all applications for special arrangements individually. You will be asked for full details of your particular circumstances.

Do I need to give my test centre notice if I have special requirements?

Yes, it is best to contact your local test centre as early as possible informing them about your special needs.

Please get in touch with your test centre at least six weeks before your test so that they can make arrangements. Accessing arrangements are free of charge.

Giving adequate notice is necessary for the modified test versions to be prepared or special administrative arrangements to be made.
